When I started the Permaculture Orchard I used a NAP system. Nitrogen fixing tree (N), Apple tree (A) and Pear or Plum tree (P). Combined they formed the NAP system of 3 trees. With time I’ve renamed it to be applicable to more climates and countries so renamed it TRIOS. Three trees, one of which is a nitrogen fixing tree (or shrub) and two of which are fruit or nut trees. Combined they form horizontal trios. On top of it (or below them) are the vertical trios, two other layers of plants (shrubs and perennials, herbs, perennial vegetables) complete the vertical trio. This diversity by design solves so many of the problems which arise with monoculture fruit trees as I once had in a 4,000 tree organic apple orchard. It all just makes good common sense.
